About the Event

Many immigrants often say they moved to Canada because of the future of their children... But... Do you know that there is an increasing overrepresentation of racialized and immigrant children in the Canadian Child Welfare System? Do you know anyone can be affected irrespective of income, culture and educational background? Can the system protect children and encourage keeping families together? There are many questions to be asked and knowledge to be gained from this session. How can immigrant parents de-escalate situations that can potentially lead to encounters with the child welfare system? What efforts are government agencies in charge of child welfare making to learn about the cultural uniqueness and differences of immigrants, to prevent misunderstandings and promote acceptance? What are the short and long-term effects of being absorbed into the system on immigrant children and their families? All these and more will be discussed with scenarios and examples. Join these professionals who have worked with immigrants and marginalized communities in the Canadian Child Welfare System for many years.
